Ioannis Kossos, 1822-1875, learned the basic elements of sculpting while working with his brother, Dimitrios, in their father's shipyard on Poros.
He studied first painting and then sculpture under Christian Siegel. After completing his studies he went to Florence on a four year scholarship awarded by the Ministry of Naval Affairs.
He returned to Athens, after spells in Paris and London, and opened a sculptural workshop, initially specialising in busts of the heroes of the Greek War of Independence.
There is a life-size figure of Patriarch Gregory V in the Propylaia, Athens University by the sculptor, Georgios Phytalis, Kossos's illustrious contemporary.
