Pratt's notation follows a proposal of his own 'to consecrate the Chess-board to MINERVA rather than to MARS' and 'to make it decidedly a political contest' by calling 'the queen, a 'minister'; the rooks or castles, peers; the pawns, commoners; and castling, closeting: leaving to other pieces, the king, the bishops, and the knights, their commonly received appelations' (Preface, p.v).
