Lot Essay

'The first book on horse racing must by "Genius Genuine" by Samuel Chifney Snr, whose riding of the Prince Regent's horse Escape in 1791 caused a scandal and furore that led to the sale of the Prince's horses and his refusal ever to set foot at Newmarket again. The Prince finally consented to the book's publication in 1804.' R. Barry, Collecting Horse Racing Books, [n.p., n.d.], pp.12-13 (illustrated).
