Klaproth accompanied a Russian embassy to China in 1805. When it was stopped at the frontier, he took the opportunity to explore Siberia. During 1807-08 he carried out ethnographic and linguistic studies in Georgia and the Caucasus, and when in 1815 he moved to Paris, he was appointed professor of Asiatic languages and literature by the King of Prussia.
