Sabin records that: 'Stedman's History is generally considered the best contemporary accounts written from the British side ... The author was apparently the American loyalist, who was born in Philadelphia, served as a Commisary of Prisoners under Howe, was retired as colonel on half pay, was appointed to examine the claims of American loyalists, and died when deputy-comptroller of the Stamp-office in June 1812.'
