The prototype was found at Baiae, near Naples about 1780. It was purchased by Charles Townley from Gavin Hamilton for #80.

A late 18th/early 19th century sculpted white marble bust, after the Antique, of Homer -- 23in. (58cm.) high, on a later simulated marble square plinth -- 48in. (122cm.) high.
