The Antique prototype of the Faun with cymbals was recorded in the mid-17th century as being in the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, in Florence. The Pompeii Faun was discovered, amidst great excitement, in 1830. It was immediately housed in the Museo Borbonico.
