Romulus, the founder of Rome, wishing to ensure the future population growth of the city, organised a festival to which were invited the inhabitants of nearby settlements, including the Sabines.

At a given signal during the banquet, the young Romans broke into the gathering and carried off the young single Sabine maidens.
