A similar pair of lamps is illustrated and discussed, Rupert Gentle and Rachel Field, English Domestic Brass, 1680-1810 and the History of its Origins, page 139.

Gentle and Field suggest that such elegant hanging lights could be either suspended from the ceiling or hung from small wall brackets.
