"[The first] 555 numbers constituted vols. I-VII of the collected edition. An eighth volume was added in 1714 ... and in 1715 another series" (Rothschild). Addison contributed about 274 numbers with Steele adding a further 236. Among the other 30 or so contributors were Pope, Swift, Eustace Budgell (1685-1737) and John Hughes (1677-1720). Samuel Johnson's journals, in the way they attempted to shape the manners and moral of his own day, very much followed the course first chartered by the Spectator. .
