Lot Essay

Provenance: Katherine Amelia Hibbert (contemporary inscription on front free endpaper).

"The first edition of Lyrical Ballads, even in its final state as prepared for reissue in London ... is one of the most attractive books to be found in modern poetical literature ... Three copies at least have the signature G 1 uncancelled" [Wise p. 6]. Coleridge contributed only 4 poems with his "Rime of the Ancyent Marinere" placed at the beginning of the book.
