The preface that replaces the advertisement in the first edition encapsulated the ideas of conservative romanticism which went far to infuriate Wordsworth's critics by defending his eccentricities with an elaborate theory on poetry. He for the first time acknowledged his authorship of the poems with his name appearing on the title. However, Coleridge involvment was not indicated and his 'Rime' was moved to the penultimate position in volume I.
