Further details
"Los Heroes de la Patria, 1828" or "Heroes of the fatherland, 1828" are presumably the rebels, including Santa Ana, who overthrew the legitimate national government. In the subsequent federalist administration the states exercised a great deal of autonomy, including the striking of local bronze. The obverse of the medal is the same as that of the copper Quarter-Real produced by the state of San Luis de Potosi beginning the same year, 1828, and was doubtless struck from one of the copper dies.
