An 18th-Century brass part theodolite, signed on the limb J R Brown MAKER, (telescope lacking), the limb and vertical half-circle with axis raised on twin Vee-supports, with tangent screw vernier adjustment, the shaped and pierced horizontal plate rotating with the compass box, the fine blued steel needle with balance weight for dip and jewelled cap, the silvered dial with fleur-de-lys to the North point, level and cross-bubble, 1 (of 2) verniers, the horizontal circle finely engraved, on tripod staff mounting - 11½ins. (29.2cm.) diameter.
