Lot Essay

Previously ascribed as a design for Prince Igor, it appears to be for the ballet Wedding Feast of the Boyars with an Assyrian theme produced at the Russian Romantic Theatre in Berlin in 1922. The dedicatee Ekaterina L'vovna was the former Bolshoi ballerina Catherine Devilliers with whom Tchelitchew had a romance which ended the same year
