Also made under the Legat name, the main feature of Avrial's design (patent 1891) is the reciprocating drive. This requires more effort to operate by hand than a conventional wheel drive, but allows foot operation without the need for a treadle stand to convert reciprocating to rotary motion. A simple foot pedal (not present with this machine) could be connected by a belt to the bottom end of the pump rod.
