The Melba headed the G & T range of machines in the 1904-6 period, and was unique in the company's first twenty-five years of existence in adopting contemporary avant-garde styling. Both the flowing lines of the embossed panels and the wide, very plain mouldings are typical of the Aesthetic Movement of the 1890-1910 era. The panels and columns were described as gilt in catalogues of the period.
