Lot Essay

"Miss Sainthill" in the novel is based upon Hill Boothby, the close friend of Samuel Johnson. This copy has Graves's signature and inscription "from the author 1774" on the half title of vol. I and his signature and date, 1774, on the endpapers in vols. II and III. He evidently gave it to Elizabeth Bowen of Bishops Lydard for the titles of vols. I and III are inscribed (but not in Graves's hand) "from the Author to Eliza Bowen Sept. 19 1780." Her name and address are written on the half title of vol. II, with other inscriptions on the endpapers of vols. II and III. Vol. I contains Graves's bookplate. There are a few manuscript annotations in the text. Those in Vol. III appear to have been made by the author. One note refers to Wesley having 3 children by his wife and 3 by his maid "after which he preached in favour of polygamy."
