A fine and unusual late 19th Century brass model condensing twin cylinder vertical blowing engine, one frame engraved 'M Noton, maker, Salford, 1874' -- 16½ x 12¾in (42 x 32.5cm)

With twin cylinders suspended beneath the floor 1¼in bore x 2¼in stroke, screwed stuffing boxes, adjustable eccentrics with lift-off rods and rocking lever operated valves, centrally mounted steam chests with separate steam ways, four vertical frames with crosshead guides, supporting direct coupled overhead mounted compressor cylinders with valve plates and central manifolds, centrally mounted crankshaft with two bearings with split brasses and spoked flywheel. Further details include barrelled connecting rods, crosshead and rocking lever operated underfloor mounted air and feed pumps, condensor and inlet and exhaust pipework, the brass floor supported on two cast iron frames. Finished in polished and lacquered brightwork, red and black. (Restored). Wood base and glazed case (later)

Lot Essay

Mr M Noton, engineer of Salford. Michael Noton, machinist, is shown in the Manchester & Salford directories from the 1830's up to 1880. The 1871 census shows him as a unemployed machinist aged 60, a widower born in Manchester whilst the 1861 census lists him as a widower aged 50, born in Hulme, Manchester, occupation machinist.
