An exceptionally rare brass cased Zeppelin compass stamped W. Ludolph G.M.B.H. 39 Bremerhaven D.R.G. 575346, the 9¼ins. diameter bowl liquid filled with floating card, with gimbals, mounting springs and turned wood stand - 12ins. (30.5cm.) high.
Note:
This compass was recovered from the wreck of ZVIII which was brought down by gunfire at Badonvillers 23rd August 1914 after the Zeppelin took part in the bombing of Antwerp having already been fired upon by friendly troops. ZVIII crashed in the Vosges Mountains, the crew escaping and returning to Germany.
