AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE TYPE A "EYE" CUP
attributed to the Workshop of Nikosthenes
Circa 530-520 B.C.
Each side painted with two large eyes with black occuli, in between the eyes is an unusual full frontal view of a bearded warrior wearing a double-crested Corinthian helmet, an incised palmette above the eyes, a dancing maenad on either side of the handles, a bird below, repaired in antiquity, the upper portion of one maenad replaced with part of an eye from another eye cup, ancient drill holes visible throughout, restored from fragments with areas of fill
