A pair of laminated walnut side chairs by Thonet, each with curved bar toprail, pierced splat, caned seat and incurved legs joined by shaped stretchers, second quarter 19th Century.
Michael Thonet started to experiment in his workshop with chairs made from bent and laminated wood in the 1830's. This pair of chairs can be ascribed to this earliest phase of Thonet's career, probably dating from circa 1840.
See Art and Design in Europe and America 1800-1900, catalogue for the 19th Century gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum, page 59, for a very similar chair.
