CECIL, Robert (First Earl of Salisbury, 1563-1612). A one page a.l.s. to his son William (afterwards second Earl, then about 13), signed as Viscount Cranborne, folio, n.p., n.d. [between 20 August 1604 and 4 May 1605], reading: "Will, when you have ben two daies more wt. Sr. Ph: Harbart, gett him to bring you to kyss the K[ing']s feet and retourn to your book ... I send you x Angells wth. Gods blessing. Commend my service to ye Erl of Worcester and take heed how you gallop, and how you feed, Remember my chardge yt. you dyce not nor sweare, your loving father -- Cranborne" (stained at one edge, holed along one fold slightly affecting text, one repair), preserved loose in an unused notebook, bound in modern half morocco, spine lettered in gilt: "Robert Cecil (Earl of Salisbury) Letter to his Son 1604."

Cecil's title of Cranborne dated from 1604 and of Salisbury from 1605. Philip Herbert became a knight of the Bath in 1603, when only 19, and was much favoured by James I.
