Forster's first published novel. The holograph manuscript, entitled Monteriano, is in the library of King's College, Cambridge. In "The Company of Friends," his Guardian piece of February 27, 1988, Arlott wrote of Forster as "an immensely sensitive novelist who hated signing books and had to be bullied to do so - these collectors, you know, have no conscience."
