MANUSCRIPT LETTER
GOLDING, William. A one page letter, dated Ebble Thatch, Bower Chalke, 15 January 1981, to John Arlott, delighted by the idea of his producing his own grapes on Alderney: "Lovely to hear there's going to be a -- what will it be? Domaine Arlott. I'm very ignorant over these intricate nomenclatures and can appreciate wines themselves about (I think) to half way up, but after that, like the vocabulary (cru, vignoble, vintage, domaine, village) they escape me." He cannot currently accept an invitation "to come" over being "In the middle of a confusion of writing, buying, inventing, refusing to talk and -- You know, if any one does! I ought to retire, too. Is there a vinyard going cheap anywhere?"
