The lecture was delivered at the University of Bristol on 16 March 1939. In his letter, Sassoon comments: "I shall, of course, be very pleased to offer my suggestions about poetry when needed. But I fully understand the difficulties about programmes now. You are, I take it, forced to be almost entirely journalistic. My point is that if you are able to work to work in something good occasionally (in the literary sense) I could help you to make it not only first-rate but straightforward & effective without being hackneyed. If you have time & can get hold of it, read my Bristol University lecture on Poetry. You will find my ideas clearly presented ...."
