Lot Essay

Letters from Yorick to Eliza contains ten genuine letters written by Sterne to Mrs Elisabeth Draper early in 1767 shortly before she sailed from England to rejoin her husband in India. The collection of general correspondence, "barbarously edited" by his daughter Lydia, appeared on 25 October 1775, some months after Sterne's Letters to his Friends on Various Occasions which had been published on 12 July and was probably edited by William Combe.
