[BONAR, John (Solicitor of Excise, 1747-1807)] Considerations on the Proposed Application to his Majesty and to Parliament for the Establishment of a Licensed Theatre in Edinburgh, [Edinburgh], no publisher's imprint, 1767, 4°, inscribed on verso of title: "To Mr David Boswell from his friend The Editor 11 March 1767," later black half morocco by Henderson and Bisset (extremities rubbed).
Together with William Creech and Henry Mackenzie, John Bonar founded the Speculative Society, the chief debating group in 18th-century Edinburgh. His friend David Boswell (1747-1807) may have witnessed the near destruction of the Edinburgh Theatre by a riot on 10 January, 1767, and certainly maintained close connections with theatrical society in the city, contributing the prologue to the play The Earl of Essex which was first performed on 9th December, 1767, to mark the re-opening of the theatre.
