Lot Essay

Daniel Baker II (1661-1727), the son of Daniel Baker I and his wife Barbara, was living at Tyler's Green, Howe, Penn, when his father died. He was admitted a fellow commoner at Trinity College, Cambridge, on 23 March 1680/1, and was admitted to the Middle Temple later the same year; being described as the son of Daniel Baker of Sir Andrew's, Holborn. He was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire in 1721 and a Justice of the Peace. He married Marha, daughter of Samuel Mellish of Blyth, Nottinghamshire. He died in 1727 and was buried at Penn, where there is a monument in his memory. Daniel kept a diary between 1690 and 1705, which is in the archives of Aylesbury County Museum, which shows him to be a kindly man, interested in the fortunes of his neighbours, and their agricultural problems, and is devoted to his family, recording the births of all of his fifteen children and other domestic happenings.
