HOBBS, Jack (1882-1963) -- A silver cigarette case, a gift to Hobbs from his captain, Percy Fender, the lid inscribed: "To commemorate the 100th yet the 1st. Bath. May 7th 1923. With every good wish P.G.H.F.," the left hand corner with the initials "J.B.H.", hallmarked Birmingham, 1922; and a pewter cigarette box, the lid inscribed: "J.A. 1946-1980" with wicket and ball motif. The match played at Bath, May 5,7, and 8, 1923, between Somerset and Surrey, was the memorable occasion of Hobbs scoring his hundreth century in first class cricket. This was in the second innings. He had been out for a duck in the first in which Surrey made a meagre 91 all out. Their second innings was declared at 216 for 5 with Hobbs 116 not out. Fender, the Surrey captain, "took a great risk in declaring, as he left Somerset plenty of time in which to get the 168 runs required, but, as Surrey had been behind on the first innings, he went out for a win at all costs ... in the end, Surrey won by ten runs" (Wisden).
