A rare and detailed model of the sail/motor RNLI Watson type lifeboat Montrose No.1 'John Russell'. -- 24½ x 37in. (62 x 94cm). With collapsible mast, standing and running rigging, fully stitched gib and mainsail in linen and deck details including deck rails, cleats, samson post, navigational lights on shielded forward crew accomodation area with seats, lockers and grating, anchor and davit, engine room lights, ventilators, brass exhaust pipe, aft steering and crew accomodation with wooden weather protection, windscreen, searchlight and horn, engine controls, binnacle, ship's wheel and tiller. Further details include rope fender, grab ropes, aft samson posts, single screw and rudder. Mounted on riveted brass trolley on two axles with flanged wheels and rails. Finished in RNLI livery with appropriate standard. Wood base.

Lot Essay

'John Russell' was sent to Montrose in September 1926 and was on station until 1939. She was launched on thirty-two occasions and saved twenty-six lives. She was placed on the reserve fleet until 1954 when she was sold. During her whole career she was launched on sixty-two occasions and saved seventy-five lives. Principle dimensions : Length overall -- 45ft. 7in. Beam -- 12ft. 6 3/8in. Fitted 76hp petrol engine.
