A well detailed 1/8in:1ft scale builders model of the MVs 'Warwick Castle'/'Durban Castle' built for the Union Castle Mail Steam Ship Co Limited -- 20½ x 74in (52 x 189cm).

With masts, aerials, rigging and derricks and deck details including anchors with 'D' chains, winch, cleats and bollards, deck rails, companionways, deck winches, hose reels, hatches, ventilators, superstructure with wood capped deck rails, bridge and wing bridges, radar and DF aerials, fans, engine room lights, swimming pool with grating surround, ten lifeboats in davits, ship's motorboat with motor case, bottom boards and thwarts in davits, boarding ladders and many other details. The hull has bilge keels, two three bladed propellers and rudder. Finished in Union Castle livery with brass and painted fittings and mounted on six plated columns in original glazed case and table, (some old minor damages, paint cracks). Measurements overall -- 66½ x 85in (169 x 216cm)

Lot Essay

The Warwick Castle was torpedoed and sunk on Saturday 14th November by U-Boat 413, (Kapitanleutnant Gustav Poel) west of Lisbon. Uniquely the same U-Boat under the same commanding officer torpedoed and sank the warship of the same name - HMS Warwick - on Sunday 20th February 1944 off Trevose Head, Cornwall
