A well detailed finely decorated mainly 19th century bone and horn model of a 98 gun ship of the line, -- 34 x 54in, (86.5 x 137cm).
With masts, yards with stun's'l booms, fine standing and running rigging with scale blocks and dead eyes and deck details including carved two headed unicorn figurehead, bone anchors with bound stocks, catheads, hair rails with rope and foliate decoration, bitts, belaying rails, gratings, capstan, stove pipes, canopied ship's bell, balustrading, carved hammock nettings, companionways, deck lights and three ship's boats with thwarts, one in stern davits, upper deck guns in carriages. The planked and pinned hull has horn strakes, carved quarter and stern galleries with mythical animal dolphins and male and female carved decoration. Mounted on three turned bone supports on bone and horn inlaid base on four bun feet.

Lot Essay

This model was originally hung outside a chandlers shop in San Francisco and has been restored and rebuilt.
