Lot Essay
The fully-rigged iron ship Astracana was built by Connell's of Glasgow in 1874 and launched as the Charlotte Croom. Registered at 1,572 tons (1,725 gross), she measured 262 feet in length with a 38 foot beam and, after two changes of ownership, was acquired by E.F. & W. Roberts of Liverpool in 1890 who renamed her Astracana. Resold to Norwegian owners in 1906 and renamed Nor, she disappeared without trace whilst en route from Bordeaux to New York in November 1906 (Other research details ar available to the buyer of this lot).
