SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (1859-1930)
A collection of correspondence relating to Spiritualism, the majority sent to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in reply to his letters (which are not present), asking advice, showing support and sharing experiences, including 47 a.l.s and 14 t.l.s by the Reverend George Vale Owen, dating Orford Vicarage, Warrington, October 1919--January 15th 1926, discussing seances, lectures, articles and the difficulties involved with being a spiritualist. One 2pp. t.l.s. from Owen dated 6th April 1920 describes a fictitious meeting between Lord Northcliffe and a sceptic at the Club; another 4pp. a.l.s. dated 15th August 1920, criticises the pronouncement of the Lambeth Conference on Spiritualism: 'The assembled Bishops have once again adopted their usual attitude of Fear & warn us of the perils attendant on the path of those who go forward ... When the Bishops fail to lead, other leaders must be found more fearless. And these will be found, never fear ... Timid souls will be shoo'ed back into safety. But there is an increasing number of both clergy & laity who will not fail to go where angels do not fear to tread'; another letter dated 19th January 1922 sympathises with Conan Doyle 'at the treatment meted out to you by Filson Smith ... in the article he is publishing ... Anyone who understands what is expected from a gentleman & sportsman on the one hand & learns what you received from a cad & bounder on the other will quite understand the shock you experienced ... There is one grain of comfort ... such opponents as this one are magnificent propagandists for Spiritualism'. Also included in the collection is a 26pp. typescript with photographs illustrating 'Paraffin Molds' of spirits hands, , entitled 'The Mediumship of Frank Kluski of Warsaw by F.W. Pawlowski', signed and inscribed by Pawlowski, describing in detail his experience at one of Klunski's seances.
