GENERAL GRANT AND THE PHILADELPHIA SANITARY FAIR

Not long after his promotion to Lieutenant General, a rank held previously only by George Washington, Grant submits his autograph for sale at the Philadelphia Sanitary Fair. On a sheet of the Sanitary Fair's ornate stationery he writes in a bold hand: "Liberal patronage for the benefit of the sick and wounded soldiers is respectfully solicited..." With the launching of the Union Army's Spring offensive in early May, a little over a month later, Union casualties in the bitter fighting reached unprecedented levels and the demand for medical supplies and nursing facilities was sorely tested.
