GRANT WILL NOT ATTEND GARFIELD'S INAUGURATION
Just after moving to New York City and founding the brokerage firm of Grant and Ward, former President Grant writes an apparent friend, discussing future plans and financial issues: "I will not be in Washington at the Inauguration [for James A. Garfield], probably not again during the winter or the spring. My expectation now is to go to Mexico in the next few weeks...[T]he funding bill, if it becomes a law as it leaves the Senate, may stop new banks, and drive most of the old ones out of existence..."
