PRESIDENT ARTHUR CANNOT LEAVE WASHINGTON FOR THE HOLIDAYS

A busy President is unable to leave the capitol due to the press of legislative duties: "As the resolution for adjournment did not pass the Senate I shall not leave Washington during the Holiday Week. I now hope to go to New York for two or three days about the 10th of January..." Arthur's autograph letters from the White House are scarce.
Edwards Pierrepont was an active New York Democrat and a famous attorney. In 1864, however, he was so disappointed in the Democratic nomination of General George B. McClellan for President that he supported the re-election of Abraham Lincoln. He also assisted the United States in prosecuting John Surratt for his part in the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln.
