EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D., President. Autograph letter signed ("Ike") as Five-Star General and Supreme Allied Commander, TO HIS WIFE, MAMIE DOUD EISENHOWER, [Versailles], 20 January [1945]. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, on lined army paper, evenly browned.
THE SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER EXPRESSES "MY TROUBLE & LONELINESS"
A personal letter regarding the possibility of Eisenhower's son, John, being assigned to a post near him: "Yesterday I received Johnny's letter, telling me he'd be willing to take a job where I could see him, at least occasionally. I sent you a teletype at once because I am anxious to put him somewhere that I can visit him. The problem is to find a job where John knows he is doing useful work & I don't want to do anything to hurt his self-respect or his reputation..." Eisenhower advises Mamie in regard to their income taxes to obtain a certain government circular which shows that "...personal money allowances given high-ranking officers do not have to be included as income...
"This is Sunday P.M. A man supposed to meet me for conference is already five minutes late. But I wanted you to know how happy I am that John sees a bit of my trouble and loneliness. I'm very proud of him...be careful of your health. Every day I think of when we can meet again..."
