GARFIELD, JAMES A., President. Autograph note signed ("JA Garfield") as Republican nominee for President, to [HIS VICE-PRESIDENTIAL RUNNING-MATE CHESTER A. ARTHUR], Mentor, Ohio, 15 September 1880. 7 lines, including dateline and signature, oblong 8vo, written on the verso of a blank sheet of Garfield's monogrammed stationery. A brief query: "What do you think of this?" Garfield was apparently forwarding a letter (not present) to Arthur regarding Republican electoral support in South Carolina. [With:] An envelope signed and dated ("J.A. Garfield Oct. 14th 1861"), lightly browned.
