First, can the Census be more economically and thoroughly taken...Second, what changes ought to be made in regard to compensating the Census takers...Third; in how short a time do you believe it practicable to take the Census and take it well..."; GARFIELD. Letter signed as Senator, to the Honorable Jesse H. McGrath, Washington, D.C., 1 December 1879, 1 page, 4to, lined stationery, repairs to verso, asking a favor: "...all the members elect...from the Eastern half of the state...are in my favor...[I] think that Senator Hollingsworth, of Cadiz, is favorable, but I do not know it.
