THE 1796 SURVEY OF THE U.S. - FLORIDA BOUNDARY
The document is boldly headed "Requisition for articles to be furnished at Cincinata for Andrew Ellicott Commissioner for running the boundary line between the United States and Spain..."; below is a list in tabular form including four keel boats, two tents, oars, camp kettles and the like. Beneath the list is Ellicott's formal request for the articles to be furnished to Charles Anderson, signed ("Andw. Ellicott"). Lieutenant Harrison, commander of the Fort Washington garrison at frontier Cincinnati, writes: "To the Quarter Master," and signs the request.
Andrew Ellicott, one of the foremost surveyors of his day, was commissioned in 1796 to survey the boundary between the United States and Florida, owned by Spain. The survey was completed in 1800 and Ellicott published a detailed report entitled The Journal of Andrew Ellicott...1796...1800.
