Lot Essay

This purse depicts two important scenes in the history of the Allied victory over Napoleon. The first is Napoleon's farewell to his troops outside the Palace at Fontainebleau on 20 April 1814 before his exile to the island of Elba and the second his arrival in exile at St Helena after his final defeat at Waterloo. The Allied forces consisted of Austrian, British, Prussian and Russian troops, and so this purse may well have been a Russian souvenir of their victory.
