A fan, the pink satin leaf painted with a lady attended by putti, in the style of Houghton, the verso black silk, with tortoiseshell sticks - 15in., circa 1890
Provenance
Given to the vendor by H.R.H. Princess Alice, Countess of Althlone, Granddaughter of H.M. Queen Victoria, who referred to it as 'The Monster' as it used to be in the 'grate-fireplace' in one of the rooms when as a child she visited her grandmother, Queen Victoria. She said 'the back was black as soot might come down the chimney'.
