signed, 1943, mixed media trompe l'oeil frieze comprising seven sheets each signed by artist, one sheet inscribed with presentation details: To Michael Balcon a souvenir of his twenty-one years as a maker of films from friends at Ealing Studios who wish him even greater success in the future, December, 1943, other sheets include a summary of the heroic story of the San Demetrio, portraits of eight characters and of the tanker, in common mount 11 x 68in., framed.

Lot Essay

San Demetrio London, Ealing, 1943, directed by Charles Frend, starred Walter Fitzgerald, Mervyn Johns, Ralph Michael, Robert Beatty, Charles Victor and others. The film was an account of the heroic feat of sixteen men from the merchant navy who brought home the stricken gasoline-laden tanker, the San Demetrio, across the Atlantic.

This picture hung in Sir Michael Balcon's office at Ealing Studios for many years.
