A collection of Grammer School art circa 1939 including a painted plaster carving of a nun's head, initialled on base A.H., 3in. high; and four sketches in charcoal or poster paints one titled Design For A Film Set, three signed A.Hill and inscribed with class details ie. 5B or 4A2, largest 11 x 15in.; and a letter of authenticity from Benny Hill's art teacher at Tauntons Grammar School, Southampton. Lot Essay

Accompanying letter states that the Art Master at Tauntons School, Southampton, selected some of his boys' best work for a Schools Exhibition to be held in London in 1939. His hopes for the exhibition were abandoned however when the school was evacuated to Bournemouth but he retained the folio of work. On rediscovering his folio in the attic he found that he had kept a few of the works apart ..These were the work of a cheerful, roundfaced boy called A.Hill... he also retained a small carving of a nun's head by Hill ..The eyes...are delicately tinted...giving ...a sence of peace, almost of reverence. For a boy with quite a reputation in the school as a joker, this struck me, for its imaginative approach....
