Plutus Nebulae Ranae Equites Acharnes Vespae Aus Pax Continionantes, in Greek [ed. in part by Marcus Musurus with the Scholia], [Venice, Aldus Manutius, Romanus, 15 July 1498], 2°, EDITIO PRINCEPS, woodcut floral and interlaced headlines and initials (lacking --10, and both blanks, title lightly browned and with short 5mm. tear at upper margin, some soiling and staining, particularly of quire O and leaves near end), 18th-century russia, flat spine titled in gilt, gilt inner dentelles (joints and corners rubbed, spine worn at head, old lot label on upper cover). Provenance: Robert Innes; William N. Blane (presentation inscription from the former to the latter, dated August 28th 1821, on front blank).
The first and a particularly beautiful edition, containing all the plays but for Lysistrata and Thesmophoriazusae (first printed in Florence by Bernard Giunta in 1515). With a Scholia "of the highest importance," it is pre-eminent among the works in Aldus's early programme of Greek printing. A complete copy was sold by Christie's at King Street, 27 November 1991 (lot 6) for 12,000.
