Lot Essay

The Alabama Question is alluded to by the book on the table by the sitter.The dispute arose out of damage caused by the (British built) Confederate ship Alabama on Federal shipping. The Federal Government blamed Great Britain .In 1871 a treaty for the settlement of the question by arbitration was agreed.The final Treaty was signed in 1872, and the U.S. arbitrator was C. F. Adams.
