Two valentine cards, one with pierced paperlace border and cameo embossed details, the hand-coloured lithographed flower-cage lifting to reveal a cameo of a young man, the other executed in watercolour possibly by Joseph Mansell, the flower-cage lifting to reveal two burning hearts, the manuscript verse above and below reads 'Affection./Why we love and why we hate/Is not granted us to know/Random chance or wilful fate/Guides the shaft from Cupid's bow', S. 5½ x 4in., L. 7 x 4½in., c. 1840-60.
