Three cameo embossed, embossed and pierced paperlace valentine cards, all stamp marked Kershaw, two containing satin centres applied with gilt medallions one with hand-coloured details, another cameo embossed with a reclining man and a deer drinking at a stream, the centre applied with gilded and chromolithographic details, the hand-written personal verse inside reads 'Live, Toil and Hope/Life oh friend is full of meaning/to the good and the wise/Be thou therefore always learning/Something from its mysteries/that shall make thee wiser, better/Hours by hours, and day by day/Let not sloth thy spirit fetter...', the reverse inscribed 'Mr. Charles Birch. Please answer', 7¼ x 4½in., 1840-60. (3)
